a chance he almost didn’t get

Just a year after falling in love with chess, Roy topped his district and qualified for the 2026 Super State Championship. But then came crushing news: his school district only funded State trips for students in the Gifted and Talented program. With the tournament just a weekend away, registration closed, and a long waiting list, the door seemed firmly shut.

Refusing to give up, we advocated directly to the Texas Chess Association. Just two days before the event, the breakthrough came—Roy was in! After a scramble to make last-minute travel plans, Roy competed and qualified for the Elementary Nationals in Baltimore. Again, facing zero district funding, his parents didn't hesitate. We stepped in to help him train and raise funds, and thanks to generous donations from local businesses, Roy and his mom were Baltimore-bound.

Roy’s story is a triumph, but it exposes a harsh reality. Not every family can afford sudden, last-minute expenses. How many talented children missed out this year because the financial hurdles were simply too high? At RGV Chess and Learning Center, we are dedicated to breaking down these barriers, so every young champion gets their chance to play.

One Move Changed Everything

When Kai was younger, the world felt overwhelming.

Like many children on the autism spectrum, social interaction didn't come naturally. Conversations were difficult. Making friends was even harder. His mother watched as he spent more and more time isolated, retreating to the safety of his room, hoping to find something that would help him connect with the world around him.

Then, in third grade, she convinced him to try something unexpected: chess.

At first, it was simply a game. But before long, it became so much more.

Chess gave Kai a place where the rules made sense, where patience was rewarded, and where confidence could grow one move at a time. The chess club became a community where he could interact with other children through a shared passion. Every tournament, every practice, and every handshake across the board helped him develop communication, confidence, and friendships that once seemed out of reach.

Today, Kai is one of the highest-rated scholastic chess players in the Rio Grande Valley. He has competed against some of the best young players in the country and continues to achieve remarkable success.

But his rating isn't the most important part of his story.

The greatest victory is that chess helped him discover confidence, build meaningful relationships, and find a place where he truly belongs.

Stories like Kai's are why the RGV Chess & Learning Center is bringing the FIDE Infinity Chess Project to the Rio Grande Valley. Every child deserves the opportunity to experience the life-changing benefits of chess, regardless of financial circumstances or developmental challenges.

Sometimes, changing a child's future begins with something as simple as a chessboard.

The Heart Behind the Board

Samantha wants the best for her children, and Kai was no different.

As the mother of a son with autism, she wanted Kai to find something where he could grow, connect with others, and feel like he belonged. She knew traditional sports were not the right fit, but she refused to stop searching for an activity where he could thrive.

For years, she looked for that opportunity.

Then Kai discovered chess.

At first, it wasn't easy. Even something as simple as shaking hands with an opponent before a match was a challenge. There were days when Kai thought about giving up, but with Samantha's encouragement, he kept going—one move at a time.

As she watched chess change her son's life, Samantha became drawn into the chess community herself. She saw the confidence, friendships, and opportunities the game created, and she wanted other children to experience the same thing.

There was only one problem—Kai's elementary school didn't have a chess team.

So Samantha created one.

She organized with other parents, helped build the program from the ground up, supervised practices, and chaperoned students to tournaments. If a parent couldn't attend, Samantha stepped in to make sure their child still had the opportunity to compete.

She did this every week, every month, and every tournament.

When Kai eventually moved schools, his new school didn't have a chess team either. Samantha started the process all over again. But she couldn't leave behind the students from his previous school who had grown to love the game, so she continued supporting both teams.

Her commitment wasn't about trophies or rankings. It was about making sure children had a place where they could build confidence, create friendships, and discover what they were capable of achieving.

Behind every chessboard is someone who helped make that opportunity possible.

And they are the reason children get to play.
