rOY'S STORY
If it wasn’t for the incredible support of this community, Roy would not have made it to State or Nationals. After a surprising first place finish in the district at Regionals, he was so proud and so grateful to take the board at the Super State Chess Tournament the following weekend.
Because he was not in the Gifted and Talented program though, the district informed his mom that they would not cover his trip. That is when something unbelievable happened. People who had never even met Roy stepped up to help. A handful of donations, a wave of supportive emails, and the steady love of his parents made it possible for Roy to compete at State after all.
His story did not stop there either. Just six weeks later, Roy and his mom were sitting on a plane bound for Baltimore for the USCF Elementary Nationals Tournament. Roy is so excited for the new scholastic chess year, and he feels like nothing can stop him. All of this happened simply because a few people believed he deserved a chance.
